MSgt.(Ret) Herbert E. "Moe " Lattimore, 71, enlisted in the US Army during October of 1944 just one month after his 14th birthday. At the age of 15 he served his country in the Army Combat Engineers during WWII.
In the Philippines he saw combat and received battle wounds around 17 years old. In June of 1947 he was assigned to the 839th Engineers Avation Battalion in a newly formed organization known as the US Air Force. Seeking Advancement he crossed-trained to a radio operator completing Radio Operators School during 1949, and for a brief time served as a Radio Operator at Keesler AFB. In 1954 He volunteered for the Combat Control Team and was assigned to the Combat Control Team Detachment at Lawson AAF at Fort Benning, GA as a member of the 3rd Aerial Port Squadron with headquarters at Pope AFB. In Aug of 1954 he attended Basic Airborne Training at FT. Benning.
He also served with great distinction on the Dyess, Tachikawa, and Viet Nam teams. He retired from Combat Control on 1 June 1974 with 27 years of military service to our great nation. He attained the rank of Major in the US Army Reserves. He is buried at Elwood Memorial Park at Abilene, TX.
