2018-04-08

Lancel R. Smith, age 66, of Commerce Township, Michigan, formerly of Monroe, passed away peacefully at 5:55 p.m. April 8, 2018, in his home.

Born June 9, 1951 in Monroe, he was the son of Tilman Clyde and Lillie Estella (Lambert) Smith. He attended Monroe High School, graduating with the class of 1969. Lancel served his country honorably during the Vietnam War from 1969 until 1973 in the United States Air Force as a Combat Controller. He married the love of his life, Barbara K. Hochradel on March 21, 1970 at Christ Lutheran Church. Sadly, after forty-five years of marriage, she preceded him in death on November 24, 2015. Lancel attended Eastern Michigan University, earning his Master’s degree in Business Administration in 1981. He worked for more than thirty years for the Federal Aviation Administration as a Air-traffic Controller and later Supervisor at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, retiring in 2010. Lancel was a member of Union Street Missionary Baptist Church for fifteen years. He loved riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle, so much so he was anxiously awaiting spring’s arrival. Lancel enjoyed traveling to mountainous areas of the United States, especially Alaska and Montana. He also loved taking trips to Mexico to spend time with his son-in-law’s family. As all grandparents do, Lancel had a special relationship with his grandchildren and cherished his time spent with them. He was a proud cancer survivor and his unfortunate passing was just two days prior to his thirteenth anniversary of being diagnosed cancer free.

To cherish his memory, Lancel leaves two children, Michael John Smith of Cadillac, Michigan and Cheryl (Jorge) Rivera of Southfield, Michigan; his loving mother, Lillie Smith of Monroe; one sister, Mary Helen Brooks of Monroe; and two grandchildren, Jazmyn and Chloe Rivera.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he was preceded in death by his father, Tillman C. Smith.
